Report: Fedor Emelianenko is a Possible UFC Target

Fedor EmelianenkoUFC President Dana White says additional signings of major MMA talent such as Fedor Emelianenko (25-1, 0-0 UFC) — the reigning PRIDE heavyweight champion and perhaps one of the greatest fighters in MMA history — can be expected in 2007, according to a “Brawl Sports” blog entry posted by the Houston Chronicle’s Steve Sievert.

Sievert, who is one of only a few MMA journalists working for a major metro newspaper, recently spoke to White, and surprisingly, the bit about Emelianenko was just a small part of the story.

I’m probably reading too much into this, but I don’t remember Dana White ever really talking publicly about going after Fedor, so I found this report both fascinating and intriguing. I’ll give him credit: White is quite savvy when it comes to creating buzz and making splashy announcements. He knows how to build hype, and he knows how to get fans talking. He plants seeds that quickly become California redwoods of gossip.

And when I read this paragraph, I couldn’t help but think that maybe — just maybe — this was a calculated move on White’s part to jumpstart the buzz:

The signing of [Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic] shows that Zuffa is willing to reach for the checkbook to attract elite talent. The UFC boss wouldn’t tip his hand, but hinted that other major signings are imminent and that could include Fedor Emalinenko, whose current short-term relationships with Pride and BodogFIGHT pretty much make him a free agent.

The signing of 30-year-old Fedor, who’s registered 17 first-round victories during his career, would arguably be the biggest signing in the history of the UFC. Additionally, it would make a huge statement about the UFC’s willingness to spend big for major talent. Fedor, after all, wouldn’t come cheap. His price tag would almost assuredly be north of $1 million per fight (edit: that $1 million would include pay-per-view “buy” bonuses) with a long-term contract required.

With the recent flurry of major signings, this would be the biggest of all.

Recently, Fedor scored a first-round submission win (via kimura) over Mark Hunt at PRIDE’s New Year’s Eve card, and he’s set to fight next on March 3 for bodogFIGHT, most likely against Jeff Monson, according to Sherdog.com.

Oh man, if this signing were to happy, I would buy EVERY single PPV for the rest of my life in THANX to UFC!! HaHa……. This would be my dream aquisition, Mirko and Fedor in UFC~!!

Please UFC, throw money at him, you sign him, u secure domiance and main stream following within a year!

Fedor is a tough fish to bring in. He is fiercely loyal to Pride. If things continue to to go down hill for Dream Stage, you can imagine this one picking up steam. BoDog is an interesting component to this seeing as they targeted Fedor immediately. They locked him up for the one show, but I don’t know if they could get him for anything outside Russia. BoDog seems to be a house of cards ready to fall. Calvin Ayre seems to have little regard for how much any of this promotion costs, and I think his financial dealings will get him in legal trouble very soon.

  3. DumbWhiteGuy Says:

I don’t think he’s fiercely loyal to anyone. If he was, he wouldn’t bother with the BoDog fight(even though it will probably be an easy win). If he wins against Monson, the MMA world will collectively let out a big “meh”. If he loses, then that means Tim Sylvia beat the guy that beat Fedor, which I’m pretty sure is a sign of the apocalypse.

If Dana White can sign Fedor, then it’s just a matter of time until PRIDE goes bust. They will just keep losing more fighters and UFC will snatch them up.

  5. WHITE NINJA Says:

Fedor is not fiercely loyal to PRIDE at all.

PRIDE’s current troubles all led from Fedor fighting away from PRIDE, against PRIDE’s wishes at Inoki Bom Ba Ye 31 Dec 2003. Sakakibara was angry with Fedor and sent japanese mafia to threaten and intimidate the promoter of the Inoki show. When this hit the public in early 2006, it directly led to the cancellation of PRIDE’s contract on Fuji TV and its current troubles.

So Dana is pretty smart. Fedor has no attachment to PRIDE at all and he will go to UFC if they make him a good offer

my god.. my dreams are coming true.

  7. Fightlinker.com Says:

White Ninja’s got it right. Also, while Fedor has stated he intends to continue fighting for Pride, the rumour that he signed a 2 year contract with them is false, a conception made from an incorrect assumption of Japanese translation. Fedor is currently fighting under 1 fight deals.

On another note, i don’t think Fedor would be making 1mil per fight. Mirko CroCop signed a 6 fight contract worth just over a million bucks, meaning 167,000 per fight not including bonuses and PPV shares. My bet is Fedor would get something around 200 to 250 as well as all of the same perks.

If he’s serious about staying a free agent, I don’t see him getting very far. Outside of Pride and UFC there’s not many people who can put him against real competition, and I can see his market value going down if he doesn’t face some real matches against top 5 opponents. If I was Dana I’d put my cards on the table re: Fedor and then continue to snap up all other serious heavyweight fighters.

  8. Galloping Jack Says:

Fedor made comments recently that indicate he had signed a two year deal with Pride. Bodog doesn’t sign fighters to exclusive contracts so I guess Pride didn’t feel threatened by the match. I wouldn’t get your hopes up. Hunt will be in the new Super Heavy division, Barnett loves Japan and Nog is set up for a title fight. Maybe Sergei, Zentsov, Overreem, Werdum, or some others will come to UFC, but not Fedor.

  9. ufcjunkie Says:

As I understand it, it’s common knowledge that the rumored two-year contract extension was actually just a botched translation from a foreign Web site and isn’t true.

Based on everyone I’ve talked to (and according to Sievert), Fedor is pretty much a free agent at this point.

  10. WHITE NINJA Says:

PRIDE doesnt feel threatened by BODOG?

I suppose this is why they have done their absolute best to interfere with Fedor’s appearance at BODOG – to the extent that the event was actually re-scheduled because Fedor’s contract didnt allow him to compete in other events within 2.5months after his last PRIDE fight.

Hunt? Hunt was a K1 fighter who has often made it known that he will fight for the highest bidder.

Nog will not be getting any title shots in the near future, because nobody wants to see Fed v Nog 4.

Barnett may love Japan, but if UFC gives him more money he can visit Japan as a tourist any time and indulge in his love of anime

  11. Galloping Jack Says:

Good Points Ninja. There may be more to the Fedor issue as you suggest, but since Bodog doesn’t lock people up to long contracts, the big stir about Fedor going to Bodog was overdone. They aren’t losing him to Bodog, Bodog is just a nuisance to their plans.

If Hunt is going to fight for the highest bidder, then I guess (and I am don’t have access to Pride’s books) that this is one Pride wins. They need a skill guy for the new SHW division and Hunt is perfect. If I were Dana I wouldn’t break the bank to steal Hunt from Pride. There are others I would be more interested in.

  12. ituloy angsulong Says:

    when will he fight next?

  13. Dennis Says:

If you think that’s bad, just wait until HBO, SHOWTIME, and the rest of the fight vultures whore up the market!!

Wouldn’t it be nice to just have a MMA channel?
